program overview
ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
The Montreal Baseball Academy - MBA is pleased to offer a highly competitive baseball program for our athletes which includes summer league and tournament play, fall baseball, and offseason training during the Winter and Spring seasons.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
SUMMER - CAUBL LEAGUE PLAY, TOURNAMENTS & EXHIBITION GAMES
Once diamonds reopen, usually in mid- to late-April, the MBA players head back outdoors and continue to prepare for the demands of the Can-Am United Baseball League (CAUBL) season which runs from the beginning of May to the beginning of August. The CAUBL is currently comprised of some of the best teams in Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Northern NY and Northern Vermont, most of which field teams in all divisions, 10U-19U.
In addition to regular league play, the MBA travels to the US to compete in various top level tournaments and plays exhibition games against some of the best baseball programs in Canada and the USA.
During the summer season, our athletes practice twice a week. Our coaches are also available for extra work if needed.
In all, our teams finish the summer season with a total of 50 to 60 games played.
FALL - TOURNAMENTS, EXHIBITION GAMES & SHOWCASES
Our fall baseball season runs from Labor Day weekend to mid-October. Fallball gives our players the opportunity to get some extra reps before the cold weather and the first snowflakes arrive. It allows new players to get to know their teammates for the upcoming summer season as well.
During fallball, the MBA hosts one tournament. For this tournament, our organization invites some of the best baseball programs in Quebec, Eastern Ontario and Northeast NY.
Also, if the weather is permitting, we usually play around 20 exhibition games including a few weekends in Northern NY.
In September 2022, we hosted our first MBA Scout Day organized by Prep Baseball Report (PBR) Ontario. This event was a private event for our athletes only. The MBA Scout Day will become an yearly fall event for our players to showcase themselves and mesure their development for the years to come.
In addition to the MBA Scout Day, our head of operations, Ray Callari, receives a lot of invitations of NCAA or NJCAA colleges to bring our players to private or public showcases and prospect camps.
For fallball, since school is started, our players practice only once a week.
In all, our teams finish the fallball season with a total of 20 to 25 games played.
winter & spring - offseason & strength and conditioning
Beginning in November, MBA players and coaching staff begin the indoor offseason program which includes strength and conditioning, skills development and position-specific training. Indoor instructor-led training sessions take place every weekend (Saturday & Sunday). During the week, our coaches give out specific development programs to our athletes to do for the week at their own pace and place.
The weekend sessions focus on group and individual instruction and aim to improve player performance through biomechanical refinements and repeated execution. These sessions are led by our team of coaches.
For the players who want to bring their game to the next level, we have collaborations with certified strength & conditioning coaches who offer baseball-specific programs. We do not require players to follow these programs, but they are highly recommended for the athletes who pursue playing at the next level. Strength and conditioning is a year-round activity for our athletes which varies in frequency and intensity to complement regular and fallball season activities.
Like in fall season, our program receives, during the offseason, invitations from NCAA and NJCAA colleges to participate in their showcases and prospect camps. Here again, we do not require our players to participate, but these are opportunities to showcase their talent in front of next-level coaches. Most of our players do participate in these showcases and camps.
As spring approaches, training focus shifts to get players game-ready in anticipation for the upcoming summer season.
athlete rest periods
While our program is structured to provide opportunities for development and gameplay throughout the year, we know that rest is really important for physical and mental health of our athletes. We alway ensure that our players have brief rest periods in between seasons to relax, enjoy vacations and other activities and spend time with friends and family.
These rest periods typically take place in end of August (between Summer & Fallball), in late October (between Fallball & Winter training) and in late December for the Christmas holiday season.
